Summary of Unwritten Chapter
John and I planned a trip to the south again for the month of October. On Columbus Day, we met at Amicolola Falls State Park, where we had reserved a 2BR cabin for a few days. On Tuesday we had planned to hike the AT access trail down from Springer Mountain, but record breaking rains messed with our plans. We became tourists for the day in Dahlonega. On Wednesday and Thursday we met Holt and Ed to hike several sections. After John left on Friday morning, Ed, Holt and I hiked three more days through Sunday.
Altogether we hiked fifty three miles to Unicoi Gap. I now have less than 50 miles to finish the south.
Altogether for the year, I hiked 209 miles in 19 hiking days and now total 1,981 or over 90% of the trail. I have 199 miles to finish the trail, 49 in the south and 150 in Maine.
The ATC expects a huge influx of AT hikers in 2015 due to the movie Wild and the upcoming movie “A Walk in the Woods” with Robert Redford. Might 90 hikers a day actually begin a northbound trek between March 1 and April 30. It might be crowded for John Holt and I for our planned Mid May hike to finish the south for me.
On Thanksgiving, our daughter Bethany and her husband Kevin gave birth to our third grandchild. Maya Helen Rose was 7 lb and 15oz and is a beautiful little girl.
More news is on the horizon.
